Our flagship course, Police Resiliency and Critical Incident Mindset, focuses on filling the gap in critical incident response. I have been to countless classes on what to do when responding to an active shooter incident, but I never was told what to expect emotionally, and how to push through to get the job done. This class teaches the students to overcome the difficult emotions that they will feel when confronted with critical incidents.
Resilience and mindset are the key to success in handling critical incidents. When I teach my in-person class, I am always asked how I was able to remember what to do while under stress during my response to the 1 October Massacre.
The answer?
Building the resilience and self-awareness to confront and override difficult emotions in the moment.
Now that we have launched the online training version of our class, I want to break down how to decide what type of training is best for your department, and the value for both in-person training and online training.
What is the Police Resiliency and Critical Incident Mindset Course?
As I mentioned above, we’ve identified a gap in how we prepare officers for decision making under stress. Although most officers know what to do, they sometimes struggle with how. We developed this course to prepare officers for the natural (but difficult) emotions that they will face during critical incidents, and how to perform at their best in the moment when it matters.
We do this by providing research-based techniques for mitigating the effects of the most common emotions felt during critical incidents. These techniques are anchored by my own experiences during the 1 October shooting in Las Vegas as well as other major incidents I responded to.
Some of the topics that I cover in the training:
Tactical Confidence: Manage chaos and make decisive choices during high-stress events.
Emotional Resilience: Process trauma to maintain mental health and focus.
Leadership in Action: Equip leaders to guide their teams through critical moments.
These skills will benefit the student not only professionally, but also in their personal lives. I discuss emotional regulation that carries over into interpersonal relationships, which can be drastically affected by the trauma officers experience almost daily.
Online Course vs. In-Person Training
On April 15th, we launched the online version of our Police Resiliency and Critical Incident Mindset Course. I am extremely proud of what we have created. Unlike most online classes that have low production quality and an instructor with questionable experience, we invested in high quality content with professionally made videos, bodycam footage, multiple filming locations (including the location of the 1 October shooting), and even an interview with a mental health professional.
Some benefits of the online training:
Flexible Access: Officers can take the course anytime and anywhere, making it ideal for agencies with tight schedules or limited resources for in-person training.
Self-Paced Learning: Officers can progress at their own pace, revisiting modules as needed to fully absorb the material.
Ideal For: Agencies with geographically dispersed personnel, smaller teams, or those needing a flexible training solution.
I know that agencies have limited time to schedule training. This is an easy way to get training to officers so they can complete it on their own schedule.
This class started as an on-site training. I have been teaching cops for decades, and I will always enjoy teaching in person. I’ve put the same level of passion into my online class as I have in my in person training. I share personal experiences coupled with body camera footage and quality slides.
Some benefits of in-person training:
Live Instructor Interaction: Direct interaction during and after class allows for more customized guidance.
Group Dynamics: Enhanced learning through group Q&A that fosters discussion and shared learning.
Ideal For: Agencies looking for a more immersive experience and those who can allocate time and resources for in-person training.
Online training will never take the place of a quality instructor interacting with students in real time. It is, however, a convenient and cost-effective way to train an entire agency, or to provide access to training for an individual student looking to invest in building resilience.
