The Overlooked Tool in Every Tactical Operation

Updated: May 13

You’re at the back of your truck, gearing up for another warrant. You inventory every piece of gear that will keep you safe: a ballistic vest with lightweight plates rated to stop most rifle rounds; a helmet; and fresh batteries in each weapon light. You methodically work through the rest of your checklist, ensuring every item functions perfectly.

You’ve logged countless tactical-training sessions to prepare for the dangers of serving search warrants, and you’ve pushed your fitness to handle even the longest operations. You’re ready for anything…right?

Maybe not.

Even the best gear and training can’t compensate if you neglect the most important element: your mindset. Patrol and tactical officers alike must make split-second decisions under extreme stress. Preparing the right mental framework pays dividends in every operation.

For years, the “warrior” mindset has readied officers for the hardships of the job, especially in active-shooter situations. Dr. Kevin Gilmartin, a pioneer in this field, describes it as believing you’re “10-foot-tall and bulletproof” (or simply “suck it up, it comes with the job”). He then teaches cool-down techniques to “unpack” the trauma you’ve carried on shift.

But what happens when “warrior” tactics aren’t enough; when stress hits before you can react, and fear erects a mental barrier that keeps you from choosing the best course of action? Have you teamed up with a professional to develop on-scene anxiety tools tailored to your needs?

That’s exactly why targeted training in emotional management is essential. Do you know how to push through fear while keeping its physiological effects in check?

In my experience working alongside some of the world’s top tacticians on the most harrowing missions, one quality unites them all: the ability to perform at their peak despite overwhelming emotional stress.

My Police Resiliency and Critical Incident Mindset course was built using these experiences as a foundation.  I provide specific tools for operators and patrol officers alike to be employed under stress to allow them to perform at their best when it matters most.

The proper mindset is one of the most powerful tools that you can bring with you on any mission, don’t forget to add it to your pre-operational checklist.
